Description

A survey of the world's literature, especially Western literature, from the Epic of Gilgamesh to the existentialist authors of the 20th Century. Special attention to the Iliad, the Aneid, the Inferno, Don Quixote, and Les Miserables.

Lectures

  • Current: Fall 2008-Spring 2009.
  • 2 Semesters. 2-3 Lectures a Week.
  • 5 Units.
  • Instructor: Mr. Greg Uttinger.

Texts

  • The Epic of Gilgamesh (Any edition--we use the Penguin Classic's edition.)
  • The Enuma Elish (Any edition--we use Dalley's translation in the World's Classic edition of Myths from Mesopotamia.)
  • Mythology by Hamilton The Iliad by Homer (The Fitzgerald translation.)
  • The Apology by Plato (Any translation; we use the Dover version.)
  • The Aneid by Vergil  (Any translation.)
  • The Inferno by Dante  (The Ciardi translation--it has great notes!)
  • Don Quixote by Cervantes  (The Starkie edition--it's abridged.)
  • Les Miserables by Hugo  (We will only be reading the first 200 or so pages.)
  • Assorted short stories and poems and one play by William Shakespeare
